Lullabies to Sing and Play – Sheetmusic for Harp
“I have always had a fascination with lullabies and after having done some research into the subject I found that they had not really been studied to any great depth.
I decided that the topic warranted some in-depth study so I undertook a PhD at Aberdeen University to carry out and document my research.
What I found was both unexpected and surprising.
I found that many lullabies from around the world contained the same themes, and although you may think that this might be just comforting images of stars and heavens, actually they were really quite dark in their themes. Not the “baby songs” people generally thought them to be. I found they were rather outpourings from the mother’s hearts, often containing her darkest fears. They were songs of warnings, danger, threats and of violence.
In this book I have arranged these songs as lead sheets with chord symbols to you can fit in a left hand that suits your abilities. You can play the chord simply as a single note in the left hand or you could try various combinations of notes to make up the chord, such as triads or 1 5 8 chords.
The content may be dark but the melodies are beautiful.
I taught many of these lullabies at the Edinburgh International Harp Festival in a course I entitled “Lullabies – The Darker Side”.
